RISING | AMAAL

Amaal Nuux shares her journey to redefine her identity while also finding ways to honour her roots. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, Amaal emigrated to Toronto, Canada with her parents and nine siblings (seven sisters and two brothers.) Amaal grew up in a traditional Muslim household where music, especially the pursuit of music-making, was taboo, yet she knew music was in her blood, and it was something she needed to pursue. We follow Amaal through her childhood memories growing up in Dixon, Ontario (Toronto's "Little Somalia") and relive the pressures she dealt with as black Muslim woman making R&B music. In the face of a personal crisis, Amaal finds a way to go beyond her immigrant story and makes peace with her multiple identities, forging a new path forward as an artist and as a human-being.
